A note from Coach Michele

 Dear Mission Viejo Diving Families,

As we approach the summer training and competition season this thought really resonates with me, as a coach, and as an athlete.  The divers have been improving exponentially since returning to the facility:  more diving/dryland time, new dives, happy faces and upbeat attitudes.  And, there’s more to come as we get deeper into the summer, continue to improve the dryland area and the kids have a break from the 12-hour school/diving day.  The staff is gearing up for a great summer and we look forward to working with the divers.  For your part, please refer to the handbook with regard to vacations and diving summer camps so that we can all work toward success.

Toward that end, we are happy to announce that we will have one of the top coaches in the country visiting our program and working with our teams in just a few short weeks. Our “visiting coach” program is something we will continue to expand over time and a unique opportunity for our divers.  In his 40-year coaching career, Julian Krug was one of the top NCAA coaches for years. Julian has produced 3 Olympians, one Olympic coach and 3 NCAA coaches. He was the NCAA Coach of the Year in 2016, the same year as his diver won the NCAA’s.  He and his wife, Doe, have also been a part of every Olympic television broadcast crew since 1984, working behind the scenes.  He has produced All Americans as well a too-many-to-count JO Champions.  His daughter, Cassidy Krug, is a 2012 Olympian as well. Fun fact, he, himself has also done a 5 ½ from the 10-meter tower off of a mini-tramp! Julian will be working with the team while I am away May 15-26.  He is an expert in many fields and we look forward to having him talk to and coach the Elite, Gold and Silver groups as well as interface with the Novice A/B groups.

Let’s all look forward to a fun summer and competitive season.  Your coaching staff is working hard to create an environment of inclusiveness, positivity and fun for the divers.

And a few other tidbits:  we are still working with TeamUnify to make the transition.  We will let you know when to make the official switch; until then, please continue with TeamSnap.  Furthermore, for those of you that have high school sophomores or older, the NCAA has changed some recruiting rules!  You can find the new rules at this link:  http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/division-i-council-adopts-recruiting-legislation

Warm Regards,

Michele Mitchell, Ph.D.

A note from Coach Justin

The goals of Dive Strong are to help with athlete and team development physically, socially, and emotionally.  These monthly contributions to the newsletter will attempt to explain what your athlete is doing in Dive Strong and how it hopes to benefit your athlete long term.

Highlights – Dr. Nessa Parkinen conducted a 30 minute session with the Divers on April 19th.  We are thankful to her for again donating her time to provide her expertise.  This month the focus was on the hips.  This coincided very well with a number of our athletes feeling knee pain.

What an exciting month for all us.  The Marguerite Aquatic Center is simply stunning.  We had a good opportunity this month to overcome some adversity and do some problem solving.  During the second week of April we had several of our divers complaining of knee pain.  What was surprising is they all had the same specific complaints of pain.  Coach Mitchell and I discussed what was happening to find out what we needed to do to take care of not just these athletes but all of them.  We started with a first knee jerk reaction (pun intended).  What are they doing at Dive Strong that contributed to these complaints of pain? They must be doing to much squatting.

After analyzing the prior few weeks of training the only recent changes to Dive Strong was actually a decrease in the amount of squatting.  Continuing through the process we looked at what changed on the pool deck.  We agreed on the most likely culprit of the knee pain.  Our divers were back at home, excited to be using their renovated facility, and preparing for the dive show.  We involved the athletes in coming to this conclusion as they reported that they were more tired than normal from more water time.  They were simply diving more and not used to the increased demands on their bodies.

The timing for this situation worked out well with Dr. Parkinen coming in to work on hip mobility and doing some extra recovery on the legs.  The knee pain has subsided as the athletes have adapted to the increase workload of more dives.

This was a great learning opportunity and I am grateful to work with a Coaching staff that is so concerned for their athletes.  Thank you for allowing me to continue to work with your children.

Sincerely,

Justin Yee

A Note from the Homeschool Program Coaches

Our homeschool program is a great group of kids who are excited to be back in their pool and on the boards at Mission! They are thriving in the short amount of time that we’ve been at the MAC.  They are eager to work hard and come with attitudes that allow everyone to get the most out of workout. We have been taking full advantage of our new dryland equipment, getting divers in belts as often as possible, and using the dry boards to enhance each workout.  We are seeing the benefits of these training techniques as these young divers have progressed in leaps and bounds this past month, adding new dives to their lists in such a short amount of time.

Several of our divers are ready for regionals this weekend with solid lists and competitive spirits.  Haley Badger, Josh and Jack Brunstetter, and Mattea Kent are all looking forward to this big competition and we can’t wait to cheer them on.

Another exciting part of our day is the crop of new students that we have added to the lessons program.  We see some promising new divers in this thriving program and look forward to encouraging and developing this growing area of kids.
